You have decided you are going to learn how to play guitar. But you want to teach yourself rather than go to a guitar teacher.

But you want good advice and don't want to waste time and money with inferior products that don't give all the information you need. You want something simple, easy to understand and follow, and that will provide the fastest possible progress.

What do I do? What learn guitar course should I buy?

The first thing you need to realize is that there are certain very important FOUNDATION skills you need to get good at to make learning easier and more rewarding.

These 'foundation' skills set you up for great technique and help you create a good sound from your guitar. Simple little things most people never really think about much at all. But get these right and learning guitar will be a lot easier.

Skills such as:

  • Holding the guitar the right way - this helps make playing easier, and also helps you develop good technique while avoiding technique-killing bad habits. (HINT: The most 'comfortable' way to hold the guitar is not necessarily the best way. The correct way to hold your guitar is going to feel uncomfortable to start. But you will get used to it, and you will reap huge technique benefits from it, too.)
  • Using your hands and fingers correctly to also develop good technique and avoid bad habits. The technique to develop is a deeply relaxed, accurate, and fluid one. One with the least finger movements as possible.
  • Basic picking and strumming techniques. Most self-taught guitarists get this totally wrong. They have so many bad habits that restrict their technical development and wonder why they find it so hard to play relatively simple things.

How you use your hands and fingers is extremely important if you want to develop the best technique and sound. So you need to work on getting those basic skills the best you can. Don't rush it.

Interestingly, most people fail at learning guitar and give up after a while. Usually because they don't fully understand the process and the importance of the basic skills.
